The Good
A good example of using visualizations to aid comprehension is The Weather Channel (www.weather.com). Nothing on this website seems terribly innovative but users can easily find the information they need and the visualizations do not detract but rather add to the content.
The Bad and The Ugly
A bad example of visuals on a website is The Opte Project (http://opte.org/maps/). Far from being intuitive, this website bombards the users with a combination of small text and incomprehensible data visualizations. Nothing is remotely linked to a cognitive structure of how the information is understood. The user cannot determine how the data is related to the visual image.
I agree that The Weather Channel's website is created well with regards to visualization. I enjoy going there because it is easy to navigate and is ultimately appealing to the eye (which is a plus).
ReplyDeleteSimilar to Chrissy, i also agree that the weather channel website is a good example of effective visualization. I feel like it's easy to navigate, all the images there convey the relevant information in a clear way and the weather maps are very helpful.
